The attempted pacification of Brazilian favelas

I looked into the law enforcement agencies trying to pacify the gang-run favelas in Brazil. I found out that, as no surprise, it has been a constant struggle to pacify these favelas where violence and gang activities has become commonplace. The people that reside here have accepted the fact that the gangs are the ones who are actually controlling the way their community functions. It is disturbing for people to just accept their fate like this, especially when violence is so prolific and can strike them at any time with very little discretion.

As mentioned above, the police and law enforcement in Brazil have been struggling to pacify these favelas. They are not welcome in these places the majority of the time and it is normally a sign of ensuing violence or danger when they enter. I read that it seems to be that the police are just content with keeping each gang inside of their own respective favela. This way inter-gang violence can be kept to a minimum and the police don’t need to worry about entering gang disputes. This seems to me as a way for the police to just let each individual gang wipe out themselves.  There is inevitably going to be some dispute inside each gang and maybe the police will get lucky and they will not have to interfere. I don’t think that this is a good enough defense against the gangs though because the people residing in each favela are still in danger of their respective ruling gang. I can only hope that these problems get resolved soon and with as little violence as possible.
