It’s really scary to read about the murder rates in regions that have a high gang presence. The global average for murders per one hundred thousand people is slightly below six people. There are certain areas where gangs are prominent where this number rises to over 90 people murdered. This number seems to be linked to the surplus of gang presence in these regions. For the most part, this article depicts Latin America as the most violent in the world in terms of murder as most of these nations with higher homicide rates are located here. Latin American nations are known to have a high gang presence in their inner cities and these gangs seem to have a strangle hold on the communities. As I’ve been learning through the research on gangs outside the United States, and more specifically in Latin America, these gangs are more influential when it comes to everyday behaviors for people. Community residents in areas with high gang presence can’t walk outside without the threat of violence; and if/when this violence strikes, they receive very little assistance from the police in making them feel safer. These areas are so unlike what people like myself have grown accustomed to. I feel no threat of violence or danger when I walk outside my house. Even in the middle of Syracuse I still feel pretty safe for the most part. People in these Latin American nations aren’t allowed this assurance and they have to be careful about everything they do and every move they make. I wish no one would have to go through life thinking this way and hopefully these people are reassured of their safety in these nations before too long.
