Revolution of 1944 and the Coup of 1954 in Guatemala

The Revolution of 1944 in Guatemala was the result of built up frustrations in the nation in regards to the way they were ruled. up until 1944 , Guatemala was governed by a series of authoritarian rulers who sought to strengthen the economy through supporting the exportation of the goods the nation provided. The citizens here viewed this as a way of undermining their work and as an exploitation of what they do for the country. This all led up to the Revolution in 1944 which was a popular pro-democracy movement  that was led by university students and labor organizations. This ultimately forced the ruler of Guatemala at the time, Jorge Ubico to resign from his position. The protests in 1944 strengthen the labor movement in the country and opened people’s eyes to this problem.

The Coup of 1954 in Guatemala was an undercover operation carried out by the Central Intelligence Agency of the United States that led to the removal of democratically elected President Jacobo Arbenz. This Coup ended the Guatemalan Revolution. The end of the revolution also resulted in the installation of a military regime in Guatemala. It seems that this is the direct result of Jorge Ubico being removed from office due to the Revolution in 1944. Ubico was supported by the United States and it was known to be one of the most brutal dictators in Latin American history. It seems that the whole reason of the Coup of 1954 was to get another dictator into office that would be supported by the United States. I really don’t understand why the United States would want a dictator to rule Guatemala though. I am rather surprised that our country wouldn’t support another country getting out from under the control of an unjust ruler.
